Hi everyone.
This article will be about my internship, which I started on the 28th of May in an Irish pub called the Corkman.
- Finding this internship was quite difficult. I first went in Lygon and Brunswick street, two streets with a lot of activity, bars and restaurants. I entered there and gave my CV but except 3 or 4, owners didn't call me back. For bars, you need a diploma called the RSA, which allow you to serve alcohol responsibly to customers. I took it, very easy but quite costly, $70. Then, coming back to home, I walked in front of the Irish pub at the corner of the street where I live, where I already had few beers, and I wondered "What the hell, why not try here?". I talked with Stacey, the manager, she offered me a trial, and that was it, I had my internship.
- The Corkman Irish Pub is the new name of the place since 2003, before it was called The Carlton Inn and was opened in 1855. It serves food and drink from 11:30am to 1am on everyday of the week, except Saturday and Sundey. The owner, Kieran, hired about 9 employees, including me, among them Stacey, the manager, 3 waiters, 4 kitchen staff and one full-time cleaner.
- I work 40 hours a week, as a waiter and bartender, serving drinks to customers, handling the cash register and cleaning the room/picking up empty drinks after clients left. All the waiters are full-time (and paid, except me). Stacey usually tell me on Friday the shifts I'll have to do on the next week. When the pub closes at 1am, it implies cleaning and tidying things till 2am but I am ok with these since I don't have classes any more, only 3 exams that I can study during the weekend. I really like my colleagues, especially the waiters with who I talk most, during the shifts when not too busy, and after around a Guinness (famous stout Irish beer) when we are cleaning the pub.
- The main difficulty I encountered is understanding some customers when they are ordering, who sometimes have a rough Australian accent, or even Irish accent, speak very fast and expect me to get it straight away. I am making them repeat few times, and I don't want them to get irritated. Also, I had once to get a drunken client out, which was becoming quite rude with other customers. We don't have security guards in the pub, given it is a small one, and I almost had to carry him outside, thankfully with the help of Marc, the other waiter on duty this night. I really like this working experience because I feel I am improving my oral English a lot, and also that I am meeting sympathetic people.

Have a wonderful day !
